They have done so by making cards more flexible in their cost and effect (adventures, kicker, mutate, foretell), by adding powerful mana sink abilities for when you run out of spells, by massively increasing the amount of card selection across all colors, and by printing more spells which can double as a land when needed

Meanwhile the design space for kicker is still wide open and calls back to years of cards, but not even ancient ones

One frontrunner is certainly Endurance, which is great against decks trying to exploit their graveyard
