Fistula-In-Ano : Bhagandara
1. Introduction:
Anal fistula or Fistula-in-ano is an abnormal hollow tract or tunnel that which is formed between the anal canal and skin around the anus, which is caused mainly due to infection in the anal region or abscess.
In Ayurveda, this is condition is known as Bhagandara, one of the serious anorectal disease condition.
2. Causes of the disease:
– Untreated Anal abscess
– Chronic constipation
– Unwholesome dietary habits
– Poor hygiene
– Inflammatory Bowel disease
– Recurrent Anal infection
– Injury or Trauma to anal area
– Tuberculosis Infection
– Weakened Immunity
– Excessive sitting and sedentary lifestyle
In Ayurveda, the above causes contributes in aggravation of Tri-Doshas(Vata, Pitta and Kapha) leading to infection and tissue destruction in the ano-rectal region.
3. Symptoms of Fistula-in-ano:
– Pus discharge / Discharge from or near the anal region
– Persistent Pain around the anal region
– Discomfort and heaviness at the anal region
– Recurrent Abscess formation
– Swelling or external boil near the anal region
4. Treatment approach
Ayurvedic treatment focuses on removing infection, healing tissues, and preventing recurrence.
– Kshara-sutra therapy is the most effective ayurvedic treatment for treating Fistula-in-ano where in medicated thread is placed in the fistulous tract to gradually cut and heal the tract simultaneously.
